Kevin Smith, ACR – Managing Director

Kevin has worked for the company since 1983, gaining his ICON (Institute of Conservation) accredited status in 1999. Kevin specialises in preventive conservation and micro-climate control and currently manages the exhibition team. He has worked on several high profile museum and gallery openings managing the production of bespoke mounts for a variety of objects and the installation of objects into galleries. Major exhibition projects include the Museum of Islamic Art, the Imperial War Museum and the travelling Tutankhamun Exhibition. In addition Kevin has a wealth of experience with contemporary art, in particular the maintenance of electric art installations.

Camilla Hughes-Hunt – Managing Director

Camilla joined Plowden & Smith in 2016 with over 25 years commercial experience.  Following her degree in Law, German and Swedish she worked for a number of blue chip companies including ICI, Royal Bank of Scotland, Diageo, Allied Domecq and Motorola where she held senior positions.  She has also been involved in two start-up companies in the finance and recruitment sectors and she has worked as an interim Director in the health sector.  Camilla brings a wealth of business experience to Plowden & Smith as well as a passion for art.

Valerie Kaufmann, A.C.R., Director, Senior Restorer

After some years in Liverpool Museum followed by two years in the conservation department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Valerie joined Anna Plowden Ltd. before the amalgamation of that company with Peter Smith Ltd. Since becoming a Director of the present company Valerie has been responsible for the quality of the work carried out in the studios. A practical restorer herself, Valerie has always favoured mixed media decorative arts objects and has had lead some prestigious projects, such as the restoration of a state coach; and Rochester Cathedral organ case and pipes. She has enjoyed the variety of work and good communications between the various specialist departments in Plowden & Smith. Valerie now specialises in the conservation and restoration of wax portraits and models for which she gained Accreditation with ICON in 2000.

Sarah Giles – Client Liaison Manager and Associate Director

Sarah has a BA (hons) in the History of Art and English and a post graduate diploma in Fine Art Valuation. She joined the company in 1998, following various Customer Service roles within the art and antiques world. Over the years, Sarah has developed a wide general knowledge of restoration and conservation practices, with the help Plowden & Smith’s conservators, and their extensive expertise. Sarah loves working with the talented team at Plowden & Smith and feels privileged to have first-hand access to museum quality works of art. She derives immense satisfaction in helping to advise clients how to restore works to their former glory and in offering recommendations on how best to preserve objects for long term stability.

Tom Palmer – Head of Furniture, Project Manager and Associate Director

Tom joined the company in 1995 with a diploma in furniture conservation from West Dean College, Chichester. Tom has excellent practical problem solving abilities and manages many large company projects, which vary from  prestigious interiors such as The Draper’s Hall and St George’s Church Bloomsbury.

Wendy McKenzie – Finance Manager

Wendy joined Plowden & Smith in 2016 with over 20 years experience in Management Accounts and Payroll.  Whilst completing her studies in accounting, Wendy began a successful career in finance, working in a range of industries including Science Research, IT, Charity, Energy and more recently Food Manufacturing. A Finance Manager for over 10 years, Wendy brings a wealth of practical accounting experience to Plowden & Smith.
