This large jardinier had previously been broken and repaired using iron rivets, which was a common early technique for repairing large ceramics. However, the iron rivets had corroded over time staining the surrounding ceramic and the large breaks and repairs detracted from the detailed artwork. To restore the ceramic the rivets were carefully removed and the iron staining was reduced using chelating agents. The ceramic was dismantled and all of the break edges were cleaned in preparation for re-bonding. Once the jardinier was reassembled, old chips and holes from the rivets were filled and made flush with the surrounding body and the losses were retouched to match the painted design.
