Surveys

New and the old. Tynemouth Priory during a condition survey of firearms for English Heritage

Condition surveys are an important aspect of preventive conservation and collection management. Our conservators objectively assess the condition of artefacts and make recommendations for their care, which may include conservation treatment, handling and packing requirements or preventive conservation measures. Condition surveys and reports are commonly required for the following reasons:

  • Objective condition report of an object prior to sale
  • A condition report prior to shipping or loan, this may be to make recommendations for packing/shipment method or to track potential damage
  • A survey of a collection to prioritise artefacts that require conservation treatment
  • A survey of a collection to write a program of maintenance
  • A survey of a collection and building to identify necessary improvements to aid preventive conservation
  • Integrated pest management surveys to track ingress and to prevent future damage
